WRIGHT COUNTY, Iowa — Nelson Media Company has announced the acquisition of the Wright County Monitor and Eagle Grove Eagle from Stateline Publications, marking a significant step in reshaping local journalism across Wright County.

As part of the agreement, Nelson Media Company will merge the newly acquired publications with the Belmond Independent to form a unified, county-wide newspaper: the Wright County Independent.

Chris Nelson, founder and CEO of Nelson Media Company, said the deal came together quickly after recognizing challenges facing the publications.

“I had heard rumblings from a few individuals in the newspaper industry and leaders in the community that there were some transition struggles going on with the two newspapers, and I went ahead and reached out to Kristin Grabinoski, owner of Stateline Publications, and we worked on getting a deal solidified throughout the night last night (Thursday),” Nelson said.

The move reflects a broader strategy by Nelson Media Company to strengthen rural newspapers through consolidation and expanded coverage. Subscription levels for both the Wright County Monitor and Eagle Grove Eagle had fallen below 500, with the Eagle Grove Eagle nearing 200 subscribers, underscoring the need for a new approach.

“This was a deal I thought was important because we had some struggles in Belmond since taking over last September going from our business model from when Dirk and Lee van der Linden owned it,” Nelson said. “This helps us put our recent discovery county-wide model for newspapers to use, and we believe it will be effective.”

The newly formed Wright County Independent will provide comprehensive coverage across all major communities in the county, including their schools, local governments and businesses. Nelson said the shift to a county-wide model will allow for deeper reporting and stronger connections across communities.

“We believe a county-wide publication can not only help build rapport with all county communities, but it allows us to do full-wide county coverage and pull this county together as a family,” he said. “In addition, adding more public notices, more advertising opportunities, and solidifying — at least we hope — with increasing our employee number, we can ensure this paper flourishes for many years and decades to come.”

Nelson also emphasized that maintaining local talent is a priority during the transition.

“We hope to keep most, if not all, of the staff from the previous newspapers,” he said. “They know these communities, they know the people, and they are a big part of what will make this new newspaper successful.”

The first edition of the Wright County Independent will debut this week, with a new logo that pays tribute to the three legacy newspapers it replaces. The publication will transition to a regular Friday release schedule following its initial print, which will be produced on Wednesday.

Nelson emphasized that while the format is changing, the commitment to local journalism remains strong.

“I have friends and colleagues in Clarion and Eagle Grove, and we hope to work very close and continue building strong relationships to make this new newspaper better than it ever has before,” he said.

A new website domain for the Wright County Independent will be launched in the coming weeks. Archives and access to previous editions of all three newspapers will remain available to the public.
